Anyone who spends any length of time with me at all knows I love books. In fact, I could consider having me own tagline when I’m introduced. “Hi, my name is Olivia and I love books, some would say too much.” Or “If it was a choice between you and the book…I’ll tell you after I finish this chapter” I have always loved reading. I’m not entirely sure why but I do know that my mom read to me and my brother almost every night before we went to bed and my grandmother taught all of her grandchildren to respect books. Every summer, I’d participate in every summer reading challenge I could hear of. Our library, my grandmother’s library, Pizza Hut’s Book-It program, I even loved assigned school readings. Every Christmas I would end up with a stack of new books (and my parents yelling at me to stop reading and finish opening my presents. True story).
I’m thinking about all this as it is the beginning of summer and I jealously watch school kids gearing up for the local library’s summer reading program. I contain myself by remembering that I also have a challenge. The Goodreads challenge that actually began as a New Years resolution. I am a woefully seven books behind schedule (don’t judge. I was reading Middlemarch). So, in a way, I do have my own summer reading program. Catch up on my challenge (which, by the way, is to read 24 books this year. Two per month was the original idea). And now, I shall stop rambling and start reading. Good luck to all those who have “reading programs” of their own!
